Eco-friendly Stroller Choices

With the concerns of global warming and the urges to “Go Green” on the rise, many parents are looking for eco-friendly baby gear items. Eco-friendly is a term that is used to classify items that inflict little or no harm to the environment. Currently the EPA does not govern the labeling of items as eco or environmentally-friendly so consumers must check out the item to ensure that it meets their criteria.

When it comes to choosing a green stroller there are a few manufacturers who place an eco-friendly label on their products, but what exactly is an eco-friendly stroller?

Since there is no standard to govern the eco-friendly label, most manufacturers label there strollers as such based on one or more of the following factors:

  • Using Organic Materials
  • Using Recyclable Materials
  • Using Re-usable Materials
  • Producing Sturdy, Longer Lasting Products
  • Using Minimal Amounts of Plastic

Orbit Baby, Stokke and Baby Planet are three stroller brands that produce eco-friendly baby strollers. Each brand offers something unique to qualify their strollers and their companies as environmentally-friendly.

Orbit Baby – Offers a modular, expandable system, which cuts down on the number of baby gear items that parents need to buy while raising a young child. When you purchase an Orbit Baby system, the stroller base is modified with accessory pieces to accommodate your child from infancy through toddlerhood.

Stokke – All plastic parts of the Stokke Xplory are marked for future re-use, recycling and handling. Additionally, all of the fabrics used on the Stokke strollers are Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is an international testing and certification system for textiles that limits the use of certain chemicals and harmful substances in production.

Baby Planet – Offers a free recycling program which donates re-usable strollers to families in need and disassembles worn out strollers to send to accredited recycling centers. Baby Planet takes back their strollers as well as strollers from other manufacturers for the recycling program.
